Magnetism of epitaxial Tb films on W(110) studied by spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy

چکیده
Thin epitaxial films of Tb metal were grown on a clean W(110) substrate in ultrahigh vacuum and studied in situ by low-energy electron microscopy. Annealed films present magnetic contrast in spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy. The energy dependence of the electron reflectivity was determined and a maximum value of its spin asymmetry of about 1% was measured. The magnetization direction of the Tb films is in-plane. Upon raising the temperature, no change in the domain distribution is observed, while the asymmetry in the electron reflectivity decreases when approaching the critical temperature, following a power law ∼(1 − T/TC) with a critical exponent β of 0.39.

متن کاملDepth-dependent magnetism in epitaxial MnSb thin films: effects of surface passivation and cleaning.
Depth-dependent magnetism in MnSb(0001) epitaxial films has been studied by combining experimental methods with different surface specificities: polarized neutron reflectivity, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), x-ray resonant magnetic scattering and spin-polarized low energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM). A native oxide ∼4.5 nm thick covers air-exposed samples which increases the film's...
متن کاملSpin-polarized low energy electron microscopy of ferromagnetic layers
Spin-polarized low energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM) is a powerful technique for the study of the magnetic domain structure of ferromagnetic surfaces, thin films and ferromagnetic / nonferromagnetic thin film systems. The unique feature of this instrument is the combination of magnetic with topographic imaging on an atomic depth scale level, and with structural information via low energy elec...

The surface structure and electronic properties of ultrathin MgO layers grown on epitaxial Fe(110) films were investigated at room temperature by means of electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The spin polarization at the Fermi level (EF) of the Fe(110) film decreases sharply with increasing thickness of t...
متن کاملDzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction accounting for the orientation of magnetic domains in ultrathin films: Fe/W(110)
Combining relativistic first-principles calculations with a micromagnetic model, we establish the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as an important mechanism in thin-film magnetism, determining the orientation of magnetic domains relative to the lattice, the type of domain wall, and the rotational direction of the magnetization in the wall. Applying the analysis to two monolayers Fe on W 110 , ...
